GER strengthens its offering with new hydrogeological expertise

GER is delighted to welcome Paolo Perello, Alessandro Baietto and Ameneh Darban to the team. Their arrival strengthens our capabilities in hydrogeology and geothermal resources and broadens the support we can offer across the full life cycle of subsurface projects.

Together they bring more than 80 years of experience in hydrogeology, geothermal resource assessment and numerical modelling. With them, GER now supports clients through every phase of research, assessment and development of groundwater and geothermal resources.

Please join us in welcoming Paolo, Alessandro and Ameneh to GER!

GER joins Innosuisse flagship project on thermal energy storage

GER is proud to announce that it will take part in the Innosuisse flagship project SwissSTES (Swiss Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage), alongside a consortium of academic research groups and industrial partners. The project is coordinated by ZHAW (Zurich University of Applied Sciences, based in Winterthur and brings together 6 academic partners and 12 industrial partners, with a total budget of several millions of CHF.

The project aims to develop seasonal thermal energy storage solutions and within the consortium, GER will lead two tasks:

Detailed mapping of underground structures, including caverns, quarries, galleries, tunnels and mines, to assess their potential for heat storage. aims to reduce Switzerland’s dependency on fossil fuels by pioneering seasonal thermal energy storage (STES) to become a net-zero carbon society. An interdisciplinary consortium develops and assesses novel STES technologies and proposes a systemic STES action and implementation plan.

National mapping of subsurface storage potential in the Molasse Basin and in shallow carbonate formations.

GER and EGEO International win their first pre-feasibility study in France 150 150 geneva-er.com

GER and EGEO International win their first pre-feasibility study in France

We are pleased to announce that GER SA, together with its partners in the EGEO International Joint Development Agreement, E.GEO Italia and Planeto SA, has been awarded its first pre-feasibility study in France. The client is a major French construction company, and the project is a large school complex and gymnasium in the Paris region.

The project will use an open-loop ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system, drawing on groundwater to provide both heating and cooling.

Our study will:

  • analyse the building’s architectural characteristics and energy needs;
  • propose a range of technical solutions, with their investment requirements and their financial and environmental benefits;
  • compare these solutions with conventional fossil-fuel boilers, including projected future energy costs and the impact on operating expenses (OPEX).

This first mandate in France marks an important step for EGEO International and shows the growing interest in low-carbon geothermal solutions for large public buildings.

GER SA successfully concluded mandate for the World Bank 150 150 geneva-er.com

GER SA successfully concluded mandate for the World Bank

GER SA, together with its partners Orbis Energy Sàrl, Planeto SA and GMK, has successfully completed a project commissioned by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC). The project developed a model for sustainable, affordable and reliable heating and cooling in Turkey, based on 5th-generation networked ground-source heat pumps (NGSHP).

In Phase 1, the team assessed feasibility and identified potential sites for a utility-scale NGSHP system serving roughly 3,000 to 30,000 homes or commercial units. The feasibility study defined the key technical and economic success factors and a set of selection criteria. It also estimated the expected system performance in Turkey and the installation costs for a district-scale network of about 10,000 to 30,000 dwelling equivalents.

The team then applied these criteria to shortlist regions, cities and neighbourhoods, and selected the best candidate for the design phase. This work was carried out in close consultation with local companies, municipalities and authorities to define viable loop routes. The resulting package has been used to procure design and construction engineering services and to secure additional funding.

Strategic Partnership: GER SA and E.GEO (VEOS Group) Unite for Sustainable Geothermal Innovation

Geneva Earth Resources (GER) is delighted to announce the launch of a long-term collaboration agreement with E.GEO (VEOS group), a leading Italian engineering company specializing in the design and installation of geothermal heating and cooling solutions, ranging from low to high temperature.

Renowned for their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, E.GEO is at the forefront of geothermal heat pump design, construction, and multi-purpose, multi-scale system installations.

This strategic partnership will significantly enhance GER’s ability to expand in the field of shallow to medium geothermal systems. By combining GER’s strong geoscience expertise and international experience in deep geothermal projects with E.GEO’s proven engineering capabilities, we aim to deliver tailored, fit-for-purpose solutions to a diverse range of clients across Europe.

These solutions will address the unique needs of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, as well as agricultural and district network projects.

GER assisted the municipality of Lenzburg in identifying geothermal potential 600 397 geneva-er.com

GER assisted the municipality of Lenzburg in identifying geothermal potential

GER’s team recently completed the first feasibility study commissioned by the municipality of Lenzburg (AG) to identify the geothermal potential of the subsurface and the energy demand across its entire territory.

With the support of SWL, the Canton of Aargau, the Hightech Zentrum Aargau and SCCER-SoE, GER characterised Lenzburg’s surface and subsurface. The study mapped the distribution of heat demand and examined all available subsurface data, from seismic surveys to well data. All of this information was compiled into a comprehensive multi-layer GIS database. That database served as the basis for a multi-criteria favourability analysis, designed specifically for source-to-sink assessments of geothermal systems.

The study helped the municipality identify promising areas for geothermal use and shape its future energy strategy in line with Swiss national climate policy.
